TRAVEL SMARTER IN KOREA
Korea Travel Essentials
Planning a trip to Korea?
Here are the practical things worth knowing before you arrive — from maps and transportation cards to mobile data, payments, food delivery, and everyday travel tips.

Start with These Four
If this is your first trip to Korea, these are the four things I recommend sorting out first.
Maps & Navigation
Which map app should I use in Korea?
Naver Map and KakaoMap are widely used in Korea and are often more useful for local navigation than relying on Google Maps alone.
Transportation Cards
Do I need a transportation card?
A rechargeable transportation card makes buses and subways much easier to use. T-money is one of the most common options and can be used across much of Korea.
SIM & eSIM
Should I get a SIM card or eSIM?
Having mobile data from the moment you arrive makes maps, translation, transportation, and reservations much easier. Depending on your phone and trip length, either a physical SIM or an eSIM can work well.
Paying in Korea
Do I need cash in Korea?
Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, but carrying a small amount of Korean won is still useful for certain markets, smaller businesses, transportation-related purchases, and unexpected situations.
More Useful Things to Know
Once the basics are covered, a few more things can make everyday travel in Korea much smoother.
Taxis
Taxis are easy to find in many Korean cities, but knowing which apps to use and how to enter destinations can make getting around much easier.
Food Delivery
Food delivery is a big part of everyday life in Korea, but some local apps can be tricky for short-term visitors because of phone, account, or payment requirements.
Translation
Translation apps are useful for menus, signs, addresses, and short conversations — even if you already know a little Korean.
Convenience Stores
Korean convenience stores offer much more than snacks, from quick meals and drinks to toiletries and everyday travel essentials.
Wi-Fi & Internet
Free Wi-Fi is common in many public places, but having your own mobile data is still far more convenient while traveling.
Emergencies & Useful Numbers
Save a few important numbers before your trip and know where to find help if something unexpected happens.
Everyday Korea
Some of the most useful travel tips are the small things you only notice once you’re here. These everyday tips cover situations that can feel unfamiliar on a first trip to Korea.
Public Restrooms
Public restrooms are easy to find in subway stations, shopping malls, cafés, and many public buildings, but availability can vary in smaller towns and traditional areas.
Power & Plugs
Korea uses 220V electricity and Type C and F plugs with two round pins. Check whether your devices support 220V and bring a plug adapter if needed.
Drinking Water
Tap water in Korea is treated and safe to drink, although many people still prefer bottled or filtered water. Bottled water is easy to find in convenience stores.
Restaurant Etiquette
In many Korean restaurants, water and some side dishes are self-service or refillable, and you may pay at the counter rather than at your table.
Trash & Recycling
Public trash bins can be harder to find than visitors expect, and Korea has detailed rules for separating general waste, food waste, and recyclables.
Korean Cafés
Cafés are everywhere in Korea, and many are comfortable places to sit for a while. Ordering, table use, and returning trays may work a little differently from what you are used to.
